Along with the Aubisque, the Peyresourde and the Aspin, the Tourmalet was part of the first classic Tour de France stage in the Pyrenees in 1910. Head south over easy rolling roads to the snow covered Pyrenees which slowly grow in size and take on the final challenge. The Route du Hautacam starts in the village of Saint-Puy in the northern end of the Gers department, one of the least densely populated and most rural areas in Western Europe. The first part of the tour takes you southwest through picture perfect countryside. It features light rolling hills with light grades. This relaxing ride ends in Le Parre which is the starting point of part 2 of the route. The ride from Le Parre to Estampes features constant short rolling hills of which you can see the top most of the time. You are gradually gaining altitude while you paddle along the same fields of mustard seed, cattle and fruit trees in full blossom that featured in part 1 but now you will also start to see the ever growing Pyrenees mountain range on the horizon. The start from Estampes is easy. You gain just 100 metres in the first 12 kilometres on very easy rolling roads before a bit of light descending. This is followed by a series of light hills and finally a long gradual climb with very easy grades to the finish in the hamlet of Luc. The views of the Pyrenees ahead are amazing and will get even better in part 4. You are now at the foothills of the Pyrenees. It doesn't take long after the start from the hamlet of Luc for the first of two steady climbs to appear. The consecutive climbs are followed by a scenic descent down to the valley just south of the city of Lourdes. The finish in Lugagnan is the starting point of the final part of the route which features the climb of the Hautacam. The light rolling roads of the Gers where this adventure once started are gone and forgotten. From Ayros-Arbouix it is a 13.6 km long climb to the ski resort town of Hautacam (1520 m) with an average gradient of 7.8%. The middle part of the climb, starting in the hamlet of Saint-Andre, is relentless with gradients of 10.3% and even 11.3%. From here on things will get a little better, although there's still a long way to go. Keep reaching for the top and get yourself a well-deserved reward by completing the challenge of the Route du Hautacam. The route takes you over four mountains in the French Alps: the Col du Glandon, the Col du Telegraphe, the Col du Galibier and Alpe d'Huez. Take on the challenge and climb them one by one. The Col du Glandon (1924 m) from the west is the first major climb of La Marmotte. It is also used frequently in the Tour de France. Starting with a nice flat warm up the climb hits you in steps with plenty of places to catch your breath. The ride features lakes, dams, forests and a mountain top valley that is reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. You take on the main bulk of the descending after the climb before starting part 2 of La Marmotte. This is followed by a long easy valley before you make a right turn in the town of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne and take on the wooded climb of the Col du Telegraphe (1556 m). The climb is fairly steady but does not offer many chances to rest until the top. The ride ends after descending a few kilometres into the ski resort town of Valloire. The ride starts hard out of the ski resort town of Valloire but then flattens out for a while before a steady valley ride to the well-known bend at Plan Lachat. Things suddenly change here and the road becomes much steeper. A few bends further up and you're into the snow line. It's a fairly hard climb now with almost no place to rest and the sight of the top so far away. After finally reaching the summit you descend down to the nearby Col du Lautaret where your epic ride comes to an end. To get there you must first descend the Col du Lautaret where you have finished part 3. The climb of Alpe d'Huez is fairly relentless with the steepest grades in the early part. The 21 hairpin bends to the top have become iconic in the cycling world with an almost holy feel to it. Thousands of riders tackle the climb every day in the summer.
